Hall of fame: Sue Read

Category: Sportsperson
Inducted: 30 March 2025

Sue began her athletics journey at the age of five in 1980 with the Corroboree Little Athletics Club. She quickly showed promise, winning her first discus event at just six years old with a throw of 8.75m, nearly 5 metres further than the second place getter.

Although she tried a variety of events—including race walking—Sue excelled in the throwing disciplines: discus, shot put, and javelin. At just 10 years old, she won her first national medal at the 1985 Australian Primary Schools National Championships held at Bruce Stadium, Canberra.

Over her junior career, Sue amassed an impressive 21 national medals across discus, shot put, and javelin. In 1987, she was selected for the Under 12 ACT Team and competed at the National Teams Athletics Championships in Darwin. There, she won gold in the Shot Put with a throw of 14.24m—(beating Michelle Haage and Jane Jamieson, who would later represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games). She also claimed silver in the discus and placed 5th in her debut national javelin competition.

Sue represented ACT at the 1988 Pacific Schools Games in Sydney and continued her winning streak at the All Schools’ National Championships. Between 1988 and 1992, she won gold and silver medals in the Under 15, Under 17, and Under 19 All Schools Championships in both discus and javelin.

She added more medals at the Under 16 and Under 18 National Championships and, in 1994, won silver in javelin and bronze in discus at the Under 20 Nationals. Throughout her career Sue won over 20 State championship medals in ACT, NSW and Victoria. At 19, Sue was ranked the 5th-best discus thrower at Senior level in Australia.

She was selected for the World Junior Track and Field Under 20 Squad in 1992 and again in 1994 for both discus and javelin.

Sue still holds multiple records, including:

  • ACT Under 12 Shot Put and Discus records (1987)
  • NSW Under 15 Discus record (1989)
  • Corroboree records in Discus and Shot Put for Under 8, 9, 10, and 12 age groups (see below)

In addition to athletics, Sue was a multi-talented athlete. She began playing soccer at age five with the Majura Junior Boys Club and went on to represent the ACT, NSW, and Australia, ultimately deciding to end her athletics carer to play as goalkeeper for the Matildas. She also achieved national success in Olympic weightlifting, winning several national titles in the snatch and clean & jerk events. Sue held ACT Academy of Sport Scholarships and was one of the first AIS Scholarship holders for the women’s soccer program in 2001.

Beyond sport, Sue is a registered psychologist and the founder of Life Unlimited Psychology. She is a keynote speaker, ABC radio presenter, and workshop facilitator, passionate about promoting mental wellness and performance. Sue works extensively with elite athletes and teams, including the Canberra Capitals WNBL team, and supports individuals across various high-performance domains.

Sue’s lifelong commitment to excellence—whether on the field, platform, or in the consulting room—makes her a truly deserving inductee into the Corroboree Hall of Fame.
