The sixth running of the Corroboree Gift took place as part of our Xmas meet in December in very hot conditions. This year we decided to break the competition up into two age divisions U6-U10 and U11 plus to try and help with the handicapping process. This would ensure we didn’t have people starting with a 55-60m head start in the finals. We had 237 entries this year and as well as the handicapped racing, the kids enjoyed the Welly Wanging competition (Gumboot throwing), egg and spoon and sack races and the Obstacle Course.

The kids were divided into 20 heats with the top two from each heat making it through to the four finals. The age grouped Ruud Relays were hotly contested once again and it was the young age groups who proved successful. The boys race was taken out by the U8 and the girls by the U9.

The adult handicapped race is always a tough one to handicap as most adults have only done one 100m event by the time the gift is run so the handicaps can be a little off but lots of fun was had by the participants with the ladies taking two of the top three positions.

Unfortunately, due to some issues with the spreadsheet/ handicapping process we were not able to run the finals on the day and so we decided to run the finals as part of the first meet back after the Christmas break. This meant a few people who were there for the heats, weren’t able to race in the final. However, it did give us a chance to re-handicap the kids based on their performance in the heats and the racing was tight for the finals, especially the senior boys race where four boys hit the line together and it took technology and a few minutes to split them.
