SSA 12&U Track & Field Championships wrap up
6 December 2024
We would like to welcome back our four Corroboree Athletes who competed in the 12 and under Track and Field team from the 2024 School Sports Australia championships at Sydney Olympic Park this past weekend.
The ACT team comprised of 54 athlete’s in total, among them were Zane Stewart, Beatrice Jackson, Arthur Giason, Beatrice and Lucy Findlay from Corroboree.
Each of these four young athletes achieved fantastic individual performances during the championships, doing themselves, their schools and our club proud.
Here’s a roundup of what they achieved and enjoyed.
Zane Stewart (10)
This was Zane’s first opportunity to represent the ACT at an All Schools Track and Field Championship. He achieved four personal bests and placed 12th in the combined event. Finishing fourth with his team in the 4 x 100m relay was a memorable highlight. Zane had a fabulous time, and his confidence has grown.
(Fun Fact – Zane’s mum Vanessa ran on the same track 24 years ago in the 2000 Pacific School Games – where she came third in the Pacific (second in Australia) for the U18-19 girls for both the 100m and the 200m.)
Beatrice Jackson (10)
This was also Bea’s first opportunity to compete at Nationals level and represent the ACT. She competed in the 10 year old girls HighJump. She finished 11th in her flight, recording a PB of 1.20m – which was 6cm above her qualifying height. Bea’s proudest achievement was transitioning to flop from scissor in just four training sessions with James Lennane and achieving a PB in wet conditions. As well as receiving a first place pennant for the teams challenge day with her new friends.
She enjoyed the atmosphere of Olympic Park where many great athletes have competed and making new friends, especially building strong friendships with the Woden LA girls who were strong rivals at the relay carnival the week before!
Arthur Giason (11)
This was Arthur’s second year qualifying for the ACT school sports team. He completed in the combined event (Tetrathlon) and the Medley Relay. Arthur’s proudest moments were getting 4 x PBs, coming 3rd on the 800m and 4th overall in the combined event. He really enjoyed hanging out with the team, making new friends and cheering everybody on. He was also a fabulous motivator to his team mates and ensured Bea and Zane were supported in their first comp.
Lucy Findlay (12)
Lucy was also a second time qualifier, this year she competed in five events for the 12yo girls (100m, 200m, HJ, LJ, 4 x 100m relay). She finished 9th in Long Jump and fourth with her team in the 4 x 100m relay. Getting a Personal Best in the 200m sprint was a proud highlight. Lucy says she enjoyed being able to compete with the fastest girls in Australia and making new friends. Next year Lucy will have her sights set on the senior School Sports team!
Congratulations Zane, Arthur, Bea and Lucy. We are so proud to see our Corroboree Athletes competing at a national level and showing personal growth, determination and having fun!
